Lorraine (yellowraver)
Sirenz Co-Founder, Dancer & Seamstress

My first real taste of the underground club scene was at 19 and within my first few trips to The Maze I was hooked.  At that time I was out every weekend, at places like The Maze, Lakota, The Powerhouse, The Depot and many more.  I immediately embraced everything the scene had to offer - the music, the atmosphere, the energy and the people.

In July 2002 I was invited to join a local dance troupe and spent the next year and a half dancing and performing as part of the troupe at nights such as Sci-Ting, Planet Shroom and Species.  Being part of this troupe was an amazing experience, something I'll always be grateful of the opportunity for, as it gave me a lot of confidence in my own abilities as a performer.

I stopped dancing as part of that troupe at the end of 2003 but soon found that I missed performing a great deal, and knew that it was something I wanted to continue with in the future, so it was an easy decision to work with an already close friend, Michelle, who had the same desire to perform.  We soon got together a crew and after a great deal of planning, designing and dressmaking we produced the first set of costumes for the Sirenz.

Our launch night at Twisted Magic on the 30th October 2004, will go down as the best night clubbing I've ever had.  It was without a doubt the proudest I've been, seeing all of us out there for the first time, knowing all the time, effort, skills and love that has gone into this project.  The crew did us all proud, from the costume ideas and designs through to making the final outfits, the energy the dancers brought to the dancefloor and the professional yet fun approach that has been adopted by everyone.

I started clubbing in Bristol when I was 17, going to clubs like The Maze and Cafe Blue and I soon got a taste for the high energy and underground music that the Bristol Scene provided.

When I was 20 I moved to Bristol to start a career as a Web Developer and have been here ever since. I loved dancing at nights such as Ripsnorter and Aubergine and eventually ended up dancing with a local troupe performing for nights such as Tribe of Frog and 666. When this ended I missed performing and along with my close friend Lorraine we decided a change was needed and Sirenz was formed.

Lots of planning and meetings later and the first set of costumes were produced in a combination of firey reds, yellows and oranges. The second set are now out, Warrior style costumes in an array of pinks and purples, and our third set are already being planned so watch out for those to appear in the near future!

Emma (psilobabe)
Original Crew Member - Dancer, Seamstress & Photographer

A self taught seamstress I have been making clothing for myself and others for over 18 years, during this time I started creating costumes and dancewear for anyone who was interested in having something unique to wear.

I started clubbing in my late 20s, dipping my toe into the uv world of the underground techno scene in Bristol. Although my music taste has shifted to less hectic psy-trance, my love of the actual club scene and the people in it has never wavered. I find the people a constant source of entertainment, inspiration and fun.

I became involved with a dance troupe early in 2003, until November 2004, where I assisted with the creating of costumes and general upkeep of existing ones, before creating a whole costume. This was a steep learning curve in my sewing ability for which I am grateful.

I became involved with Sirenz in summer 2004, but have been great friends with the founder members for over 5 years and have worked with them both on other costume projects. I enjoyed the creative pool that quickly formed within the group and the ideas that sprang forth were exciting and fresh. Initially only planning to assist with the design and creation of costumes I was soon also part of the dance crew.

Of the costumes we have at present I have made 5 of the flame themed costumes, and 4 of our newer purple tribal themed costumes, it has been an exciting time for me and I hope it continues.

Heather
Original Crew Member - Dancer & Seamstress

Heather joined Sirenz as an original member of the team, with lots of fresh ideas. She made two of the original fire costumes and has also made one of our Warrior costumes.

Heather joins us to dance whenever she is able to, however, because she often works weekends this is sometimes difficult.

Cat (sepheri)
Original Crew Member - Dancer & Seamstress

Cat joined Sirenz as an original member of the team and made two of the original fire costumes.

Although Cat enjoyed dancing with us, she now lives away from Bristol and feels she is no longer able to do so regularly, but we would always welcome her back if she was free to join us for any of our future events.

I was about 12 when Santa placed a cheap but very cheerful box set of dance music in my stocking, the 4cds contained music i had never heared of before, artists such as Shamen, Bizzare Inc and Altern-8! These four cds became my bible throughout my early teens as i had to endure the pain of school mates discussing if East 17 were in fact better than Boyzone! Looking back I'm sure it was the cds that set me up for never ending weekends that were about to come.....

......I was about 16 when i realized that there were clubs around playing dance music, mainly hard house, the commercial stuff, but i didn't know any better and loved it! Much later i discovered the Bristol underground scene, and quickly fell in love with Psy-trance and Acid Techno and all the lovely, fluffy, welcoming people! It felt like i had found a family that i never knew existed, but the best part is there are still plenty more people to meet and still plenty more club nights to dance for!

I first got into clubbing at the end of the 90s. Although I had always enjoyed dance music it was the lure of the underground club filled with happy friendly faces that made me instantly knew where I belonged.

Since then I spent 3 years heavily involved in a Bristol night called Excessive before becomming a resident DJ for Beats Reality.

Well I've been clubbing now for more years than I care to remember (or perhaps can remember). It all started for me in Ibiza, in 1987 where I was introduced to dance music. It was like nothing I had heard before. Bright, fast and bonkers. Brilliant I thought.

Since then I've been listening to dance music evolve and diversify. And investigating all those dirty sticky floors. Here I am nearly 20 years later still getting butterflies in my tummy with anticipation. Still loving the atmosphere of all those fluffy munters grinning back at me on the dancefloor. So until I go completely deaf and my knees fall off.......COME ON!!!

I stumbled into Bristol's dance scene on my 18th birthday, with the help of Lorraine and friend of the Sirenz, Scotty. My time on the scene felt short-lived, but I've had some amazing nights. My first Tribe Of Frog coincided with my first outing as a Siren, and I could probably pit that night as one of my top 5 all time best weekend's of my life. Sadly I'm not as permanent a staple in Bristol's club nights as I used to be, what with my move to Cardiff and and an intergration into the rock band community, but I'll always have fond memories of 'ave-in it large with the girlies, and donning the amazing work of one Miss Emma (love you, you beautiful lady).

I first started dancing for a local charity show (The Lyra Girls) when I was 13, which involved tap and jazz and at the same time I was taking lessons in Rock 'n' Roll, Latin, Disco and Ballroom. I took these lessons for about 2 years, completing and passing many exams. Unfortunately I had to hang up my dancing shoes for a while to concentrate on finishing school, but it wasn't long until they were out again as I did 2 performing arts courses, one in 6th Form and one at college. I left collage and started full time work, but the dancing didn't stop there! I was out every weekend at one free party or another stomping my socks off!

It was about June last year when I was introduced to Psy-Trance, and although the parties I went to were few and far between, it only took a couple of months before I was out every weekend again being swept up with the music and dancing in a world of my own.

It was at one of these parties (Psy-Forum), where I was asked to join the Sirenz. It came as a complete shock! I began the evening dancing to Colin Oood's set with Emma and Michelle just having a great time and letting loose as always. Or so I thought until a few hours later when Emma shyly came up to me and started chatting, before I knew it she'd had me say yes! A few weeks later here I am!!

I've been clubbing since I was a wee nipper; starting off in places such as Aubergine at Cafe Blue then really finding my feet at Sundissential Bristol.

It was then I became enlightened and moved into the psy-trance / techno scene, meeting the coolest of people and regularly going to nights at the Depot, Lakota and the Packhorse.

Throughout all this time you would have found me shoving shapes on the dancefloors (there's nothing better than a good boogie), although more recently I have been getting into the funkier side of things such as house, breaks and bigbeat.

The Breaksday tent this year at Glade is MINE... ;-)

Well I reckon I must've been flinging myself about in clubs for more years than you could shake a glow stick at. I'd done a couple of years of hard house and trance but it was always really about the d&b. I almost thought it couldn't get any better when I stumbled across psytrance. At the time I was working in a club in Plymouth when this one night it was hijacked by a raving-mad bunch of hippies. Eyedelic had arrived and I was hooked. From then on it was plenty free parties and festivals, dancing and poi spinning. Somewhere in-between all that I did art at uni, moved to Brizzel and now I work at Bristol College as a support worker. So, in my 9 weeks of summer holiday this year (no hate mail please), in between pulling pints at the Duke, sitting in parks getting drunk, throwing my contact juggling ball at the floor, strutting about in the odd fetish club, and attempting to spread my kinky art work across the globe, I'm planning on dancing all my troubles away, especially if it involves techno... get in!

So if you see me bouncing and a flailing then come have a dance. Bring it on... the summer is a coming people!

Having not grown up in Bristol, I did not get into the underground clubbing scene until I met my current boyfriend and our group of friends kind of discovered it together. I grew up in Oxford where the biggest club on offer is Park End, which is the kind with a Cheesy room, R&B room, a House and Trance room and shuts at 2am! I spent many a happy weekend here with my girly mates, sticking to the Trance and dancing like crazy, with our glow sticks ablaze, often getting asked if we worked there! We also made regular trips to Bournemouth for Slinky at the Opera house and were regulars on the festival circuit. I think I only went to one Psy-Trance night in my whole time in Oxford called Sonic Boom held at the Zodiac. I spent most of my time here watching bands as the local Oxford music scene has a lot to offer and is generally what the teenagers follow.

In my first 2 years in Bristol I was amazed at the size of the clubs, but I lived with a bunch of lads so was only shown such places as the Works, Evolution and Creation, where I always had a good dance and admired the girls dancing on stage and podiums. Little did I know what I was missing out on! First time I went to the Black Swan I was amazed: 'A camp fire in a club, could it get any better?!' I also totally revelled in the fantastic atmosphere and all the lovely people you meet. And especially the fact there is no dress code! Wahey!

This just got the ball rolling and I have not stopped going Lakota, Blue Mountain, Thekla, etc for Psy-Trance, Breakcore and Acid Techno mostly. But I still love Hard House and Trance so the Syndicate is a must every now and then although I think my roots are still with the rock music!

My love of dancing started more years ago than I can remember as I joined a number of dance classes, including ballet, tap and modern, at a very young age. My passion for the club scene, however, came a lot later! Having grown up in Worcester, where the club scene is virtually non-existant, I headed to Bristol where clubs such as the Black Swan, Lakota and Clockwork became my regular haunts, along with numerous free-parties! Along with psy-trance, I love jungle, breaks and dub though will happily dance to anything loud with a good beat!
