Klub Kabu @ Blue Mountain

Friday 30th March 2007
Review by Siren Clare

Klub Kabu is described as a once a year night with a difference and I think that it certainly lived up to its title. With an all female line up of local DJ's playing anything from Hip Hop to Funky House the night debuted the Blue Mountain Club in Stokes Croft after several years spent at the Malcolm X Centre.

Sirenz dancing at the night were Lorraine, Vicky and myself (Clare). As this was my first night dancing with the Sirenz I was a little nervous but think that it was a great night to choose as a beginning.

Doors to the club opened at 10:00 and we arrived shortly after. We were greeted by the organisers saying such things as "We are so glad you are here girls, there is no one dancing, we need you to get them up there!" So, with no hesitation (except a look at the fab décor) we stashed our bags and took over the main room dance floor. As soon as we started dancing the nerves disappeared and I relished the empty dancing space, which gave an ideal opportunity for Siren Michelle to get some good quality photos.

Sure enough with a little encouragement the room began to fill with a good mixture of characters enjoying the tunes.

The music started out as some electro and funky house from DJ's such as Kacey, Ellypunk and Miss Divine with tracks that everybody recognised and was a good start to get everyone boogieing!

A little later into the evening our friend and fellow Siren Jodie Lee played an absolutely blinding Breaks set which had the downstairs absolutely packed and pumping with cheers after every track! You could see she was totally working the crowd and dancing around herself! Well done Jodie, I danced so hard and totally enjoyed it!

The mood then changed to Drum&Bass (DJ Veba) with a cracking D&B remix of the Luniz 'I got five on it' which the crowd totally enjoyed along with other such classics from the Fugees.

By this time the place was rather hot and sweaty so the girls giving out free fruit and ice pops were well timed and gratefully received. I also thought that the free lollies, sweeties and a man giving out fortunes were a very nice touch. Not to mention the Red Hot Frilly Knicker Can-Can Troupe who provided the half time entertainment much to everyone's pleasure, especially the boys!

By the end of the night with still a full dance floor the Techno started (DJ Catjane) and kept on going until well past 4am when the night was supposed to end.

Although the Sirenz did not spend much time upstairs because it was so busy, I could definitely tell that the Hip Hop, Disco, Soul, etc was going down a storm throughout the night. And as usual the balcony was providing a chilled out retreat for all the danced out clubbers.

So all in all a great night with such diverse music which the punters were really enjoying as something a bit different, and I felt that everybody was really up for dancing to whatever came at them next! A big success especially as the night was to raise money for Bristol's Oncology Centre so they can buy a new radiotherapy machine to treat breast cancer and also to celebrate national women's week. Girl Power!
